How to Renew Your Domain Names Automatically

Domain names are not automatically renewed at Gandi unless you have specifically activated automatic renewal for your domains.

If you have not enabled automatic renewal on your domain name and you fail to renew your domain before the deadline, you will not be charged, your domain registration will expire, and your domain name will eventually be deleted.

The time at which a domain is deleted is set by the registry who manages the extension, and therefore varies between extensions. You can find the deletion date for most extensions in our renewal deadlines table.

Automatic renewals are paid for using your prepaid account. Your prepaid account must have sufficient funds to pay for the renewal for the renewal to be completed, or you must have a saved payment method. The renewal will first try to use money in your prepaid account. If your prepaid account does not have sufficient funds for the renewal, the system will then use any saved payment methods you have to complete the order. If you do not have any saved payment methods, the renewal will not be completed.

How to Enable or Disable Automatic Renewals

Warning

The automatic renewal is based on the last recorded renewal time done manually before its activation. This means that if you last registered your domain name for two years, then activate the automatic renewal, it will be done automatically for a period of two years.

Only the domain’s owner (or a user that is a member of the owner team of the domain), the administrative contact, or the billing contact can enable or disable automatic renewal for a domain.

To activate automatic renewal by default:

  1. After logging in, click “Organizations” in the left navigation menu.

  2. Click on the name of the organization you want to edit.

  3. Click “Enable automatic renewal” near the middle of the page.

How does it work?

Automatic renewal for the majority of extensions can occur at 31 days, 15 days, and 1 day before the last possible renewal date of the domain, depending on if funds are available in the chosen prepaid account at those times. If you wish to cancel automatic renewal of a domain you should do so at least 31 days before the last possible renewal date.

Many corporate extensions (special domains offered only to customers who subscribe to our corporate services) require a Gandi agent to manually initiate the renewal with the registry. Because this process can take longer than a traditional renewal, our system flags these domains for renewal 45 days before the last possible renewal date. If you wish to cancel automatic renewal of one of these corporate extensions, you should do so at least 45 days before the last possible renewal date.

Once an automatic renewal is launched, the process cannot be canceled and a refund will not be offered.

The last possible renewal date varies by extension and is not necessarily the same as the expiration date. You can find the last possible renewal date for most extensions in our renewal deadlines table. For example, the last possible renewal date may be several days before the official expiration date. If the last possible expiration date is 6 days before the expiration date then the domain will be renewed automatically 37 days before the expiration date. If the last possible renewal date is after the expiration date, then the automatic renewal will occur 31 days before the expiration date instead.

We will send an email to the domain’s billing contact once the renewal is complete.
