What Are Glue Records and How Do I Use Them with Gandi Domains

A glue record provides the IP address of a nameserver so that the domain can be resolved in the case where the name server is hosted at the same domain as the domain name itself.

For example, let’s say the domain name example.com has the nameserver ns1.example.com. When requests for example.com are sent to the registry they will point to ns1.example.com. This, in turn, will point back to example.com, which points to ns1.example.com, which points to example.com, and so on. This creates a dependency loop and makes the domain name unresolvable. Glue records include the IP address of the nameserver along with the name of the nameserver, preventing this problem from happening.

To add a glue record follow these steps:

1. After logging in, click on “Domain” in the left navigation menu.

2. Click on the domain name you want to manage

3. Select the “Nameservers” tab

4. Click the button that says “Go to Glue Records” near the bottom of the page.

5. Click “Add.

6. Type in the name of your record into the box. Do not include the domain.

7. Type in the IP address(es) for that record.

8. Click “Add.”

9. Go to the “Nameservers” tab.

10. Click “Change” to enter the form for changing nameservers.

11. Click the “External” pill at the top of the form.

12. Enter the names of the records you created in the Glue Records tab.

13. Click “Save.”

Like all changes to DNS records, the changes you make here will take from 12 to 72 hours to become effective while the new DNS records are propagated worldwide.
