Question "Why no www in my sitename?", by Peter V.

I just registered the website www.respot.be.

But http://www.respot.be is not working, only http://respot.be is working.

How can I change this to www.respot.be ?

Answer, by Adam S.

Hi Peter,

Perhaps this might help:

  1. Click the link 'Management'
  2. Under 'Technical Settings', click the link 'Manage DNS zone file'
  3. Ensure the 'A' record has the name 'WWW' and not '@'

I suspect this is the problem.

Cheers, Adam.

Short answer

Set up DNS properly to send users to "www.respot.be" when the user types in "respot.be", or just tell everyone your website is at "respot.be". It doesn't need the "www" in front of it.

Long answer

The answer is that you don't register a site like "www.respot.be", you register a domain like "respot.be", and then you can use DNS to point to different servers in that domain like "www.respot.be", "respot.be", "this.is.a.long.name.respot.be". Different servers in that domain can do different things. By convention, "www" is for web pages, "ftp" is for file transfers, "smtp" or "mail" is for an email server. Also by convention, a web server at "respot.be" should either return the same content as "www.respot.be" or redirect the user's web browser to "www.respot.be".
