Create an IMAP account for Apple Mail

There are two possible ways to do this:

  • a. You are using Apple Mail for the first time, and no account has been created yet
  • b. You already have at least one account set up.

In both cases, you will go through the same steps, except for a slight difference in the first configuration screen and the fact that you will be led to set up an outgoing server (SMTP) if you don't have an account set up yet.

1a. You are using Apple Mail for the first time

a. If you are using Apple Mail for the first time, a welcome pop-up will open when you start the application.

Click on “Continue” and go to the next step of the guide.

1b. You already have at least one account in Mail

b. If you already have an account, after you run Apple Mail, go to the Mail menu and choose Preferences.

In the dialog box that appears, click on the “Accounts” tab.

Then, click on the + button that is on the lower left-hand corner of the pop-up window, which corresponds to Add an account :

2. Configure the account

Incoming Mail Server

This is where the 2 cases come together. In the new window, “General Information”, select the account type, “IMAP”. Enter the description of the account that you would like (this information only appears for you).

Next, enter your full name as well as your e-mail address, and click on “Continue”.

In the “Incoming Mail Server” window, enter in the first box. As a username, enter the FULL e-mail address that you have created (do not use an alias address or a forwarding address - those will not work. Be sure to include the @yourdomain.tld! - where “tld” = .com, .net etc.). Finally, enter the password that you specified when you created your e-mail mailbox.

Outgoing mail server

In the next window, you will configure (or change if you already have one) your outgoing mail server (SMTP).

Enter the value smtp.yourdomain.tld which, using our example is In the User Authentication part, enter your FULL e-mail address, plus the password that you defined when you created your e-mail mailbox.

Just so you know, the SMTP port for your Gandi account is the default port, which is 25 (this is usually filled in automatically at this stage).

Of course, you may choose to keep the SMTP server that you have already configured if this is the case. When you click on “Continue”, the application will automatically verify all the information that you have entered before going to the final account summary page.

The last page shows you a summary of your account. After clicking on “Continue”, you will have finished the creation of your IMAP acount. Congratulations!
