How to Create an Email Address for Your Domain Name

You can purchase email inboxes for domains you hold at Gandi. These emails will exist as credits on your account until you go into the settings for your domain and create the email inbox. This page explains how to create an email address using those credits.

Note

We do not currently offer email address at subdomains, such as email@subdomain.example.com.

Check for Correct MX Records

Before you create your email address, we recommend that you check the DNS Records of the domain name where you will host your email address to make sure the proper MX records are in place. You can do this by following these steps:

  1. After logging into your account, click on “Domain” in the left navigation menu.

  2. Click on the name of the domain name where you will create the new email address.

  3. Click on the “DNS Records” tab.

  4. Check to see if the records below are included. If they are there, you can move on to creating your email address.

  5. If you do not see the records, you can add them. Click on “Text Mode”.

  6. Next, click on “Edit DNS records”.

  7. Copy and paste the records below into the text box. Each @ should be the first character on a new line.

  8. Click “Save”.

@ 10800 IN MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net.
@ 10800 IN MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net.
@ 10800 IN TXT "v=spf1 include:_mailcust.gandi.net ?all"

Life cycle of a mailbox

A mailbox, whether Standard or Premium, renewed monthly or yearly, which is not renewed (voluntarily or involuntarily), follows the same cycle of “End of Life”.

  • At Expiration date (D) : The Mailbox is expired. It can be renewed, POP & IMAP services (incoming) are still active, SMTP service (sending) still work, and you can still access to your mailbox content via our Webmails or a Mail client.

  • From Expiration date + 1 day (D+1) to Expiration date + 51 days (D+51) : Mailbox is suspended. You can still renew it, but it can’t send or receive emails anymore, and you will not be able to access webmails. PLEASE NOTE : Emails sent to this address during this period are not delivered to our mail servers. They are bounced to the sender with a specific error message. They will not be retrievable from our side.

  • From Expiration date + 52 days (D+52) to Expiration date + 59 days (59 days) : Mailbox is deactivated. It is not renewable anymore, services are still deactivated and access to your emails via our webmails is available only on demand via the Gandi Support.

  • Finally, on Expiration date + 60 days (D+60) your mailbox is deleted. No email will be kept, and no access will be possible.

You still can, if necessary, purge (delete all messages) or delete your mailbox from your Gandi administration.

Set Up Your Email Client

After you have created your email address, you will need to configure your local email client to view and send email for that address. You can also access your mail with the email address and password you gave through our webmail.
