Create a Gandi VPS in Expert mode

We will present you how to create an expert server with Gandi.

As we propose 3 kinds of modes (AI, prepackaged AI, Expert), this tutorial will explain you how to create a VPS in expert mode, which means that you will manage it manually in command line (after connecting through SSH).

Note:

Some knowledge in Linux system administration with our advice and the tutorials found on Internet are generally sufficient to manage your expert server.

Before creating a VPS, it is necessary to buy the needed resources (at least one share), the creation will not be available if you do not subscribe to hosting resources.

The operating system will be installed on a 3GB system disk, the swap partition which depends on the amount of RAM memory will be given automatically by our storage platform.

In expert mode, we do not use the 8GB of available disk quota contained in a resource share to create your VPS. You are free to use the 5GB left as you want to, increase the system disk size, create data or backup disks, …

  • As stated in the introduction, it is mandatory to subscribe to some resources shares on your hosting account to create your first VPS.

The creation order is realized on the control panel, when you click on the blue button "create a server".

  • The fisrt step of the process asks you to choose the resources that you want to allocate to your VPS.

Our solution is flexible, you can change those parameters by adding or removing resources to your server later.

Note:

When you create a VPS, the interface will propose you only the available resources of your hosting account.

  • You will have to choose the hostname of your VPS, this name should not contain special characters or spaces, it should be between 3 and 12 characters long.
  • Then choose your password, it should be at least 8 characters long, with special characters (without accented characters) in upper or lower case, with numbers and punctuation marks (except space).

Note:

The hostname is a name used for internal management of Gandi servers. Do not confuse that name with the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) of a server, which is declared in the /etc/hosts file. Once you have selected your hostname on the control panel, you will not be able to modify it later.

Choose your distribution or your personal system image

  • You may choose your operating system in the proposed list of Gandi images, or in the personal images that you created.
