Transferring your domain from GoDaddy

Important:

GoDaddy now requires photo identification to release domains for transfer out if you used their private registration service. If you launch a transfer away from GoDaddy without doing this, they will simply refuse the transfer, even after you have confirmed all the transfer confirmation emails and provided the correct auth code.

Note:

Many customers transferring from GoDaddy encounter a red message in our transfer section saying that some information is missing or mandatory. This is because it is missing from your GoDaddy registrant whois data. You can easily update the data by following the instructions here.

Step 1: Unlock your domain name

1. Log into your GoDaddy account at http://www.godaddy.com.

You will now see the "My Account Login" page.

2. In the bar menu at the top of the page, roll your mouse cursor over "Domains", and select "My Domains".

You will now see your "Domains" page.

3. In the table on the page that lists your domain names, their expiration date and status, etc. click on the domain name that you would like to transfer to Gandi.

You will now see the "Domains » Details" page that lists all the information of your domain name.

4. In the left hand column, find the line that says "Locked". Click on the link that comes after it that says "(Change)".

You will now see the "Set Locking" page.

5. Be sure to select the button that says "Unlock", and click the "Ok" button.

You will now see another "Set Locking" page telling you to wait.

6. Click the "Ok" button once again.

You will now be taken back to the "Domains » Details" page that lists all the information of your domain name.

Step 2: Recover your authorization code

7. Once more, in the left-hand column, find the line that says "Authorization Code:", and click on the link right after it that says, "Send by Email".

You will now see the "Send Authorization Code Email" page.

8. Click the "Ok" button on the lower-right hand corner.

You will now see the "Send Authorization Code Email" page once again telling you that the e-mail has been sent. Your authorization code will have been sent to the e-mail address of your GoDaddy account.

9. Click the "Ok" button on the lower-right hand corner again.

You will now be taken back to the "Domains » Details" page that lists all the information of your domain name.

10. Sign out of your account by clicking on the "Logout" link at the very top of the page.

11. Log into your e-mail account and find the mail from support@godaddy.com with the subject line "(yourdomain) » Information You Requested".

You will see the following line in the e-mail:

Authorization Info: fhSDKc>D

Copy down the code (fhSDKc>D in this example - note that this is a fake code, and will NOT work for your domain). This is the code that you will need to provide to Gandi when you request the transfer from our website.

Note:

Note! Verisign has recently changed its rules concerning what is accepted for auth codes. They must now be 8 characters long and contain a special character.

Step 3: Launch the transfer at Gandi

Go to http://www.gandi.net and follow our standard transfer process for domain names.

You can follow our tutorial on the procedures to transfer a domain name to Gandi at the following page of our wiki: Transferring a domain to Gandi.
