Gandi's Private Domain Registration service

To turn on Gandi's whois private domain registration service, you simply need to connect to the Gandi handle in question, and then proceed to the account page (see how).

From that page, where it says "Private Domain Registration", simply select "yes".

Note:

The domain must have transfer protection activated in order for the private domain registration service to be engaged. If you have activated this service, but your whois information still appears, then log into your domain name and be sure to activate the transfer protection. It is the reverse of doing this.

Note that the physical address will only be hidden under certain circumstances, notably not in the case when the whois information is managed by the registry (ex. for .eu domains), or if it is attached to a domain name that is about to be transferred to another registrar.

It is not possible at Gandi to hide *all* of your whois information.

This is for two reasons:

  • ICANN and the registry require that the legal owner's full name is present and visible in the whois
  • Gandi allows you to be the legal owner of the domain name, and as such it is important that you have not only the full rights but also the obligations.

More on this service can be found on our website at http://www.gandi.net/domain/whois/

More detailed information about the reasons for certain things regarding Private Domain Registration can be found here.
