====== Gandi's Web Forwarding Management Interface ====== The same form is used for adding and editing your web forwarding addresses: {{http://www.gandi.net/static/images/tutorial/webforwardinterface-en.gif}} There are three things that you need to specify for your forwarding to work: ===== 1. Type of forwarding: ===== This is where you can **specify the type of forwarding that you want to use**: {{http://www.gandi.net/static/images/tutorial/choosemasked-en.gif}} ==== What forms of web forwarding does Gandi provide? ==== Gandi provides you with three different types of forwarding: **301**, **302**, and **"Masked"**. * **301 Direct (permanent) Forwarding** : the real address of the site appears after the forwarding. Good search-engine ranking. \\ This is direct forwarding, meaning that the domain name will change once the browser has been forwarded to the new address. 301 forwarding is called "Permanent" forwarding, because it is intended for addresses that are "permanent" - such as the address of a website - as opposed to just a link within a page. \\ * **302 Direct (temporary) Forwarding** : the real address of the site appears after the forwarding. Poor search-engine ranking. \\ \\ This form of direct forwarding is called temporary, because it is used for links within websites that are not meant to be there for a long time. Search engines, therefore tend to give this type of forwarding lower priority when indexing content for their query results. \\ * **"Masked" Forwarding** : the real address does not appear (your domain name stays in the address bar). Very poor search-engine ranking. \\ \\ This type of forwarding is used to forward your domain to another website, while keeping your domain or subdomain name in the web browser's address bar. The main disadvantage of this type of forwarding is that is uses Frames. Many search engines, such as Google, ignore framed content, and so your site will not be found easily via your domain in a search engine query? \\ ===== 2. Subdomain: ===== **This is where you must indicate the address that you want to forward.** * Add "**www**" to forward: "**www.yourdomain.com**" * Leave empty to forward just your domain: "yourdomain.com" * Add "*" to forward all subdomains of the domain (including www) * Add any other subdomain you would like forward! If you want to forward both: http://**www.yourdomain.com** and http://**yourdomain.com** to another website...you will need to create two forwarding addresses, one with a "www" in the subdomain box, and one where you leave the subdomain box empty. ===== 3. Forwarding address: ===== **Finally, you must specify the target address.** Begin by choosing the type (http://, https://, or ftp://). The standard setting is "http://", so you can just leave this bit alone unless you need to change it for a particular reason. Next, in the empty text box, enter the address of the website that you want your visitors to be forwarded to. When you are done, click the "Create" button to add the forwarding address. That's it! ----
